Do those of you with the SMG in your M5 tend to use the paddles on the wheel more often to change gears, or the shift lever itself?

When driving the new M3 with the DCT recently, I found using the shift lever itself seemed more convenient.

I presume the concept between the SMG and the DCT is fairly similar, so I just wondered.
I only use the paddles when I have coffee or something like that in my hand...other then that its the shifter. But then again I am your basket case 1 hand on the wheel guy. I suposse if I used the 10 and 2 rule I might use the paddles.

When I first got my M5 (now gone), I didn't think I'd use the paddles that often. However, once I got into the swing of things, I found myself using the paddles about 75% of the time. I only used the gear shift at lights, when rolling from a stop, etc.

Like others have said, it depends on where your right arm is when you need to upshift. Unlike the non-M SMG cars where you can shift down and up with either paddle, the M paddles have separate functions...up is on the right, and down is on the left. My left hand is always on the wheel, so down-shifting was more convenient using the left paddle. Up-shifting was probably 50/50 with paddle/shifter.

Coming from manual cars it took a me a bit getting used to using the SMG paddles. Now I use the paddles 80-90% of the time. I only use the gear lever when my hands are out of position.

I love SMG/paddles on the track, no need for heel toe.

This may sound like a stupid question, but here it goes.

how come in the iDrive setting for M mode, it only goes up 5/6 depending on what you choose? But in the SMG mode - regular driving, it will go up to 7.

also in looking at JMC's posting, he has a lot of settings for various driving conditions. Is that programmed in the iDrive as well?

Thanks!

they are two different things...........in mdrive via idrive, the settings you are noting are for drivelogic, ie S5 or S6, which has to do with the shift program (speed of shift execution), not the gears. When you are driving and see the 7 in your speedo, that is the gear you are in...i would suggest you read the manual, seriously.
