Rudy -

How are you liking the new sport automatic transmission in your new 550i? I know you were a huge fan of the SMG in your last car and just wondered if you miss it. I'm debating going from 6MT to auto in my next car, just for convenience sake.

Thoughts?
If you've already decided to go to an auto in your next car, then the SAT is a no-brainer. I do like it a lot and, given the fact that the SMG isn't available, it's the next best thing...

That's the rub, I suppose. I have pondered the SAT, but I'm not sold on it. Its hard to know whether I'd like it as an alternative or not.

Make sure your wife test drives the car with SMG first though. I had a customer a few days ago that picked up a car with SMG transmission. He thought he was buying an automatic transmission car, and has told me that the way the car shifts and engages is not to his liking.

So make sure your wife knows what she's getting into!

Hate to ask a stupid question but I am considering an M5 (used 07) and curently drive a 545i with 6 speed mnual. My wife doesn't care for the 6 speed. The only SMG I've driven was a 04 or so M3 and i didn't care for it but can't say I was driving it correctly. Thoughts?
I have a 2005 545 with SMG and I absolutely love everything about the transmission. I can only wish I could have bought the 550 or m5 - then I'd only leave the car to buy gas.

There's no reason your wife couldn't master the SMG - you only have to remember to tap twice to place it in automatic manual mode. The car does drift just like your 6 speed on hills, etc, but take up of the clutch is quick and as simple as putting your foot into the gas.

The M5 SMG is different than my 545's. The 545 you can move up or down with either control - however the M5 I believe you can only go up on the right and down on the left, I think.

If your wife doesn't care for the SMG, (insert punchline here).

Don't forget to reset the SMG every now and then.
Out of curiosity, how do you M5 SMG-ers reset the SMG?
