Default Transmission Adaptation Reset

My 04 545i has the slight hiccup between 37-40mph most of us complain about. This coincedently started happening after mechatronics sleeve leak last year. The repair included draining the fluid, installing a new pan/filter and mechatronics sleeve. Are you suppoed to reset the transmission adpatation values via INPA or DIS at that time? I know it was not performed by my indy. Is it ok for me to do now, a year later? WIll I harm anything by running the adaptation reset?

It doesn't hurt anything to reset trans adaptations any time.
After reset, adaptations values will be 'learned'.

Thanks PCY!

WIll it drive ok afterwards while it is learning? Also, could it make the transmission feel smoother after the reset?

Have you checked the fluid level ? Since it started after the fluid change it possible that it can be low on fluid ..

You should do a fluid level check on DIS to make sure the level is good . Service Functions is where you will find the ATF level check function

Like PCY mentioned it won't hurt to reset the adaptations .. However in most cases it's necessary when either updating software or replacing the solenoids or valve body ..

When I did a software update the dealer did the adaptations at 35,000 .. Ive done two more fluid and pan services since and have not done a adaptations reset ..

If you do the reset the car won"t shift smoothly at first, it will after it relearns .. Also don't baby it after the reset .. Drive it like you stole it in manual mode ,, and go thru all three shifting modes constantly untill the relearning process is achieved ..

Shift Quality Complaints - Shift Quality complaints consist of harsh up or down
shifts, improper shift points and erratic shifting. These complaints could be related
to electronic/software issues or hydraulic/mechanical problems. Perform quick test
and check SIB’s before proceeding. As with most concerns, check the transmission
fluid level and condition as well.
Do not clear adaptation values unless instructed to do so by BMW Technical
Hotline.
Slipping - This type of issue is usually associated with a fault code. Be sure to
check the transmission fluid level and condition.

You typically shouldn't have a need to reset adaptations unless you have replaced actual mechanical components inside of the transmission. It's perfectly fine to do it whenever you want though. Don't be alarmed if your transmission shifts hard at first, this is part of the 'learning' process. EGS is basically learning your driving habits and compensating for them as well as the amount of normal wear present inside of the clutch packs. It should smooth out after 100 to 200 miles.
