Default Steering wheel angle normal?

Hi,

just bought my first BMW - An E60 520d LCI 2009.

I was wondering if it is normal that the steering wheel angle is tilted a little bit to the right. See attached picture. By that I mean that the left side of the wheel is a little closer to the dashboard than the right side.

In my previous car the wheel was straight at 90 degrees when sitting right in front of it.

Is this by design by BMW or is there something wrong with my car?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't noticed anything tilted.

Have you heard of the N47 timing chain issue by the way?

Strange...I wonder why mine is a bit tilted?

Yes, I have heard of the timing chain issue. Mine is a N47 D20C. Is that model affected too?

Get a wheel alignment part of that is setting the steering wheel straight, had any front end work done before it got tilted?

Mine had a similar issue when I bought it a couple months ago. Took mine to a good alignment shop recommended by my local Indy . Problem solved.

If you have the sports active suspension and steering I think there is a steering reset procedure. Though in my case it made the angle of the wheel worse which is why I knew I needed the alignment.

Note the stick figure diagram in the OP's picture. That is not normal.

When I hold the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions, the steering wheel feels flat.

Yeah, I read this wrong the first time, too. The OP is saying the wheel is not turned left or right, which you would get with a misalignment, but rather the steering wheel is not parallel to the dash (perpendicular to the driver).

Mine feels like it is straight, although I have been in cars where the steering wheel felt like the driver's seat should have been 4" to the left.

Was the car ever in a front end collision? Maybe something bent?

Have you had your arms measured lately? ;-)
