Default Metal-like rattle/knocking sound

Hey everyone, I have a 09 E60 528i.

Occasionally I'll hear a metallic-like rattle/knocking sound coming somewhere from behind me. It sounds like something metal knocking against something metal. It usual occurs when I hit a pothole or a bump just right, however it doesn't always occur. It's almost seems to come and go at random.

At first I thought it was suspension related, but when my boyfriend was getting in the car last night (front passenger), and closed his door, I heard the rattle again, this time coming somewhere right behind me. I checked under my seat, the rear seats, and shook the rear driver door to see if I could trace the metal knocking noise, but I couldn't reproduce it. However when I had him shut and open the door repeatedly, I could still hear it behind me. Since this metal knock/rattle can be easily produced with a door slamming shut, I'm starting to think it's not the suspension, as if it was something that was this loose, it should be rattling/knocking all the time.

Does anyone has any ideas what this might be? Thank you in advance!

I'm having a similar issue. I can hear it when the car is silent, and usually when I go over bumps. For me, the sound is coming from either the center console, or the passenger dashboard side.

I've read a little bit and some say that it may be suspension components.

Interested in seeing other responses as well.

Happy new year
I fixed a 2007 525i over the Christmas break that had a similar problem so I dont know if this is the same as yours but I hope it will help.

She would hear a ting ting ting sound every time she hit a bump.
It sounded like it was coming from between the seats behind her.

What it ended up being was the sun roof. I know crazy isnt it?

The flap in the sun roof that lowers when the roof is opening and closes at the front of the opening was bent.
I think from the heat in summer.
Every bump she hit made the flap hit the glass sunroof and the tinging sound

The sound must have been deflected down and sounded like it was behind her.
I bent the flap and the sound was gone and she is happy

In what direction did you bend the flap?

Yes it's the sunroof, i too have this issue but worked it out quickly because im tall. Mine does this occasionally and fixes itself when closed and reopened 9 times out of 10 so i haven't needed to repair as of yet.

This was my original thought, but if a door closing can reproduce this rattle/knock, the car should constantly be making this noise as I'm driving if something in the suspension is that loose.

Happy new year as well!

Is that the metal bar towards the front of the sunroof (nearest the hood)? Could I stick some velcro or padding of some sort to reduce the rattling? I haven't checked if mine is bent, but I'll definitely check it in the morning. Thanks!

I'm guessing one way to confirm it is the sunroof is to open it completely and drive around and see if it produces the sound again?

It sounds like your center support bracket bolts are loose. It's a common issue on pre-LCI E60/61 models and is caused by the bolts not being torqued down correctly. SIB 51 13 04 addresses this issue.

UPDATE/FIXED: THIS!! It was a nice day this morning and decided to open the sunroof and drive it for a bit. No metal rattling! The damn wind deflector was tapping against the sunroof, creating that stupid sound. I decided to prod around and found that the wind deflector is spring loaded and actually presses right up against the sunroof when it's in the closed position. I'm guessing when the springs weaken overtime it allows the wind deflector to bounce against the glass, creating this metal sounding knock. I put a long piece of velcro (the soft side) along the bar and the rattle is gone! This was driving me F****** nuts and I'm really happy it's now resolved. Thank you!
