Hello,

My car started a week ago very hard when it was cold. I used a diagnostic tool to see if there were any errors and I found error code 4203. So I bought a new glow unit, and the error code is still showing.

Now this morning (also a new battery) the car started fine.

Also when cold starting the car (first time) and open the bonnet, a very small of smoke comes. and disappears after a while.

The diagnostic tool doesn't say the glow plugs are faulty, but I think some of them are not working well...

What do you guys think?

Did you reset/clear the error code after installing the glow unit?

You probably don't want to get back into the engine right away but it might be worthwhile checking the resistance on the plugs just to be sure.

I had 5 bad plugs in mine (with error codes) but the controller was good.

Yes it was resetted. But the glow plugs doesn't give an error on the laptop. But could it be that some of the glow plugs are faulty?

Have you looked when engine is cold, before first start of the day, to see if any of the injector connections or fuel rail have any wet spots where fuel is bleeding down overnight? Could well be a fuel leak that prevents all injectors from properly itemizing the diesel during first start. Or is your starting problem truly tied to unusually cold temperature periods?

The plug error is detected as high resistance. New ones I think were around 5 ohms. I have never heard on bad ones being undetected so probably not the plugs. As jtbgonesailing says might be fuel supply/atomization issue? Out of my depth there I'm afraid.

Could you please explain in more details how to check the resistance on the plugs? I mean at what point? How to use the multi-meter I know. )

One probe end on the block and the other on the end of the glow plug (cable removed). The meter might show a little higher resistance without removing the plugs - but it will be obvious which are the bad ones (if any).

Mine showed around 5 ohms for the good ones and thousands of ohms or open circuit for the bad ones.
