Smile E60 Squeaky steering wheel issue -----FIXED----

Hey Guys

I've had this issue for a while it sounds to me like some sort of rubber rubbing against something solid.

Please refer to the video below.

Perform any of the following at your own risk. As always, follow basic common-sense safety procedures, especially when it comes to jacking up your car.

I did some research and decide to spay WD40 along my steering column those red circled areas it certainly helped BUT didn't get rid of the noise completely.

After some more research I found out that there is a permanent filter in the bottom of the power steering fluid reservoir, which might get clogged over time.

BMW Part #: 324 168 512 17

I think the OEM is made by ZF but I bought this cheap made in China URO part# 32 41 1 097 164 it worked just fine for me.

Amazon.com: URO Parts 32 41 1 097 164 Power Steering Reservoir: Automotive Amazon.com: URO Parts 32 41 1 097 164 Power Steering Reservoir: Automotive

I followed Bavarian Auto's guide to replace the reservoir the video is not on a E60 but the procedures are almost identical except ours is easier because we don't have to remove the whole air filter box.

PAY attention on the green sticker on your reservoir cap, if it says use CHF11S ONLY
DO NOT use ATF.

Here is a picture of the bracket and screws.

I bought 2 cans of Pentosin Hydraulic Fluid - 1 Liter (it is inter changeable with CHF11S) flushed my system.
Amazon.com: Pentosin (CHF202) Hydraulic Fluid - 1 Liter: Automotive Amazon.com: Pentosin (CHF202) Hydraulic Fluid - 1 Liter: Automotive
I also did the extended bleeding procedure by running engine at 2500RPM and going lock to lock with brake pedal depressed until the fluid is super hot(105c) then let the brake pedal go and turned steering lock to lock 20 more times.(thanks to porsche911targa provided all this info in his/her post)

I've been driving the car for almost 5 weeks now and I am happy to report that the squeaky sound have never came back so I think its safe to say problem solved.

so...you think this "whistle" is caused by something into the oil filter? I didn't understand very well why this little "tank" can make this whistle..

Mine is making this same noise - seems common. So all you did was replace the reservoir? I'm going to try this since it seems pretty harmless to replace it even if it does not fix the noise. I did open it the other day to check the level in case that was what was causing the squeek and it seemed to have pressure built up in it. Not sure if that is normal, just bought the car...

I dont think its possible to build up pressure(I could be wrong) because on mine there is a pressure release hole on the side of the cap.

Huh - ok maybe I was imagining it. Either way I will swap this out.

make sure you flush the system completely and do the "extended bleeding procedure" I believe thats what really helped the problem

How do you flush the entire system?

Edit: I'll do a search, no need to explain it. Thanks!

One more question, when do you do this extended bleeding procedure? After you've put the new tank and fluid on?
