Very unfortunate. But thank you for the information because I didn't know. Is it specific to BMW or high end cars, or do you think it would happen with any car ?

"Do not drive through water on the road if it is deeper than 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walking speed at the most. Otherwise, the vehicle's engine, the electrical systems and the transmission may be damaged."

I'm surprised they say 1 foot -- to me, that seems high (and very risky...)

When I lived in ATL, it was frequent to Flash floods in the areas that new developments and strip malls were going up in.
I had a CAI on my R32 and knew it was basically a reverse snorkel due to it being a 3" tube about 4 inches from the ground directly to the Engine manifold ...
Long story short, There was one time a parking lot run off ran down across 141 ( major north south thorough fair), it was about 3 foot deep. I stopped and then care fully drove my car up on to the center median and crossed the small river...
Basically kept it at idle , and my car was high and dry.... on the other hand one of my co workers drove Head first in to the raging torrent in his Honda S2000... it made it about 1/3 the way across and got Hydro locked.... He had to put his top down to try and get out b/c the water was 3/4th the way up his doors.... He had to Buy a new engine....
Moral of the story , DON"T DRIVE IN TO DEEP Water with any thing short of a boat , or a highly raised Pick up truck....
