Just what the title says, I'm shopping for some new rims and I'm trying to decide what would look better 19's or 20's on my stock non sport suspension, I'm trying to achieve the least amount of gap between the tire and the fender, will 19's or 20's fill that gap or will it be the same because of the sidewall compensation?

Filling the wheel well is more about tire sizing than wheel sizing. If you do the typical "plus" sizing whereby you keep overall rolling diameter equal to stock , you will do nothing to fill out the wheel wells and IMO giant wheel gaps with big wheels and low profile tires looks much worse than smaller wheels with taller tires.


If you want to travel down the path of wheel/tires packages that increase the overall diameter to fill the wheels wells, just know that you will be:
A. Effectively increasing your final drive gear ratio which will cause your speedometer to read slower than normal. This increase in final drive ratio will also make your car accelerate slower. It may impact gas mileage as well.
B. You are raising the height of the car, potentially making it handle worse due to the taller center of gravity.


An overall larger wheel and tire package will likely be heavier which will further impact both points A and B above.

I never really looked at it that way, thanks for the input. What route would you go for the best possible look without touching the suspension then? I originally wanted to go 19's with 245/35 in the front and 275/30 in the back but I fear of it looking like a 4x4.

If you want to fill the wheel wells and not lower, then your only choice is to increase your overall diameter.


A "plus" 19" setup on a 5-series is a 245/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear. You can fill more of the wheel well by going 245/40/19 in front and 275/35/19 in the rear.


Here is a good example of what filling the wheel wells by increasing overall diameter will look like. This is an Xdrive E61 with stock suspension:

That navy blue wagon is running 18 inch rims if I'm not mistaken, but I get the idea of increasing my overall diameter. I read this on another forum using Google and this is what they said;

"You could oversize by 5% of the aspect ratio, which would result in an overall diameter increase of 1 inch. That's about the maximum. If you oversize any more, the wheels will not clear your spring seats anymore. Oversizing by 1 inch is not a big problem, I did it with my 20" wheels, as I didn't fancy the "somebody painted the rim edge black" look with a 285/25 on the rear. That would then be the sizes the 6 series runs.
245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rears. That's it. No higher aspect ratio possible.
By oversizing one inch you will incur the following. The car overall will be slightly raised in height (don't matter only half an inch).
The speedo will have NO positive tolerance anymore, it will be near to 100% accurate. So if before doing 55 was a genuine 50, it will now be 55 exactly.
Keep that in mind when passing speed cameras etc. Speedo diff will also be a milometer difference. The accumulated miles will now also be pretty much accurate, so don't be surprised if you see a slight consumption drop on your brim to brim to brim calculations, as with less revolutions of the larger wheels the shown collected mileage will be less on the milo.
Some positive aspects are that you will have a half decently comfy ride and the wheels will fill the arches more, too, so less prominent gap between wheel and arch.
If this confused you, the simple answer is, yes you can do it, but only by 5% on the aspect ratio."

So with all this info, I'm pretty set on going with the 40's and 35's, I'm sure it will help eliminate the 4x4 look. Thanks for helping me out bud, it's appreciated! I'll update with pictures when the time comes

Here's a picture of my e60 with 20 inch rims. My tyres 245 35 20 rear 255 35 20. Wheels never touch no matter what the load.
Handling is amazing and car grips on to the road. Snow never driven it didn't wanna even test it
Yes my car speedo is perfect had these wheels since I bought it 2008 and always thought it was BMW engineering but recently found out it was due to the wheels.
I love the accuracy myself others don't.

@ sydmaz : I love your chrome wrapped + 20 inch rim E60, it's nice seeing a non sport suspension without that much fender well gap without degrading ride quality and handling, thank you for providing the pictures, it made making my decision a little easier!!

@ NyC545i : Nice car love your rims in both pictures, the ones in the second picture are the M5 F10 ones right? Do you have some more pictures of those? Also is your car equipped with the sport suspension or is it just shadowline trim? What size tires are you running with the 20's? Any rubbing or anything? Btw thanks for the pictures, much appreciated!

Hi, thanks for the support, Forgot to mention I used to have a 545i then I upgraded to a 2009 550i M package. Tires are 245-35-20 front and rears are 275-30-20, the wheels are actually from a 2014 BMW gran coupe. By the way I'm thinking of trading this wheels for a clean set of OEM 172 wheels, my wheels are original brand new condition not a scratch. I'm thinking about selling or trading my car in so I wanna go back to stock.
