So I did ordered all the parts needed for my oil change and finally did it today. A little nervous at first, but it went rather smooth.

I ordered the cap removal wrench from Amazon. About $13.67+shipping. Worked like a charm.

Bought 7 quarts of Mobil 0w40 and Mann filter off Amazon too.

Got under car and removed the plastic cover. Unscrewed the 17mm bolt and let the old oil drain. It was pretty black.

Unscrewed the oil cap and the oil filter cover. Put everything back, INCLUDING ALL 3 WASHERS provided.

I DID NOT, however, perform the reset on the computer. It still shows that my next oil is due in 8000 miles, so I figured it was okay to just leave it. Am I okay to not reset the computer for now?

Reset Oil Change Mileage, and yes you can reset it whenever you want it doesn't make a difference. If it is at 8000 you could just leave it and change it again when its at 500 or 3000 depending on whether you want to do your next change in 7500 or 5000 miles, then perform a reset.

Side note to all this good stuff. Run a seafoam motor treatment(not the usual one) or a B12 chem additive. I wasnt really a fan of these products until I noticed a lot of varnish which could lead to sludge build up. You can run them before you change or as a treatment after

i think i read somewhere that 0w40 is better is you live in cold areas. since 5w40 is thicker ( i think), add cold weather to it and it's harder on the car to crank up and get started. so unless you live in a very cold weather environment (like snowy conditons), i wouldn't think the difference in viscosities would matter that much.

my manual actually tells me to use 5w40, but i used 0w40. i live in souther california and it's usually sunny here.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is the BMW recommended oil for your car.
Walmart now carries it in the 5qt jugs for $25.00. Buy two and keep the extra for topping off or toward the next change. Alternately you can buy one jug and two qts at $7 ea.

Unless you catch a sale no auto store will come close to these prices.

Walmart, Mobil 1, 0W-40, at $25 for 5 quarts is crazy cheap.

Just buy it, and change it every 5K - 7K; and you're golden.

We've beat oil to death on various forums. (I've been one of the perpetrators).

At then end of they day, Mobil 1 (0W-40) plus Hengst, Mann, BMW oil filters at 5k to 7k and you can forget about this issue.

Put this one to bed.
