2005 E61 530d - Engine Replacement
So over the weekend my wife decided to drive our E61 530d through a large puddle below....
During its little play in the puddle the car swallowed a little too much water and imploded! On first inspection i suspect valve/piston/conrod damage given by the amount of clattering around in there when its fired up, so bad that i only tried it once for a few secs and immediately turned it off - I'm hoping its not thrown anything out the exhaust and destroyed my turbo....
Sump fluid volume has also doubled (i suspect now a mix of oil, fuel & water) and the coolant has disappeared so its pretty terminal!
So i have a few options
1) Rebuild the current engine
2) Fit a reconditioned engine (exchange)
3) Fit a used engine from a breaker
A reputable Indy near me suggested either a recon unit or a breaker part, suggesting a used unit from a breaker might be preferable given we don't yet know the extent of the damage to the current engine.
So what i am wondering is am i restricted to a 306D2 engine from an E60/E61 from the same era or is there any other variants that will fit? - 330d/730d/X5 etc
RealOEM suggests the below part numbers
but when i then check for other variants for 11000420382 it only lists the E60 and E61 suggesting other variants will not fit.
Any help will be much appreciated, is there anything else i need to look out for when selecting a donor engine?
Is there anything i need to consider when doing a like for like swap (same part number)?
Will any part needs to be kept from my old engine and fitted to my new one? I am thinking injectors / fuel pump and any other electrics that potentially code be coded to the car so will have to be moved over as i suspect my donor engine will not be complete.
Thanks
Craig

Went thro this after swirl flap failure, as a rule most breakers will sell you a bare engine, so you will need to swap your pump, injectors, turbo, and all other ancilaries over. TBO this is the best way if you know your car was fine beforehand and if the injectors havnt been clouted by a bit of piston. I would guess other engines will fit with swapping of some bracketry but I wouldnt risk it for what it costs to source one of these engines. The other option ofcourse is to find a breakers willing to sell you a complete engine with fuel system and turbo, it may be more expensive but any breakers sellign a package like this will be able to show you it running and/or offer a warranty. The injectors will require coding but TBO this is bread and butter work for any garage these days. Obviously when you get the work done get the garage to clean out the intercooler and associated pipework

EDIT: if your not afraid of some DIY early e60 530d's are starting to come thro under 4k, Im sure you could pick up a running salvage car complete for 1.5k if you have the room to burst it you may come out the other end with a free engine.
