Idrive...phhh.. Flip it the bird and do it proudly when your adding your own type of oil lol..What you have is fine make sure to watch the oil filter on the next change to see how it held up. Also if you have a higher mileage situation use a 5w40 Rotella Shell oil (walmart) its a high mile change , high detergent and shouldnt burn off
You're mistaken; the additive packages in a LL01-approved oil are vastly different than a standard synthetic (much higher HTHS and a lot more lubricant additives), REGARDLESS of how often you change it.

I have run all of those and they great I was just making a farce about the all mighty idrive. Yes the oils are great but dont really fight varnish, they have light detergents.

I have run both oils (Mobile1 0-40 and 5-30)and no issues with either. I do agree with the comments on climate impacts on oil weights. The 0-40 covers both ends of the temperature extremes, so it takes a bit of the guesswork out of it. In the winter, a 0 starting weight would be good. For summer, if you are in a warmer climate, I would lean more toward the 40wt at the higher end. I am in NC (moderate climate particularly for spring/summer/fall), and I used the hi-milage version of the 5-30 wt oil you have listed above. I will have another change before winter monts and go to the 0 weight at the low end).
I-drive is a great reminder, but if you take care of your own maintenance, you probably change more often and pay more attention than the benefit i-drive can provide. Definitely not knocking i drive, but I think it is more geared towards folks who need reminders to maintain their vehicles.

My Ride: Stock 2004 BMW 525i
Hello all Gregg here and I just purchased my first BMW 5 days ago. She is an '04 E60 525i and I always like to start new vehicle ownership with an oil and oil filter change. Since I live in Houston and it is usually rather warm will Mobil 1 5W-30 be a good choice? Also what oil filter would yall recommend? I work for a exotic car (Ferrari,Lamborghini etc etc) maintenance, storage and sales company and we stock a huge selection of oil and oil/air filters but I want to start fresh and change all three.
Thank you in advance,
Gregg

So any way I have yet to change my oil and oil filter (I have only put 500 miles on the car). I can purchase the Mann oil filter locally (highly recommended by other BMW owners) yet decided against using Mobil 1 and was considering Liqui Moly's new 4600. There are no local, only out of state dealers, so continuing my search I came across Pentosin which is German manufactured and meets/exceeds OE requirements and I can purchase locally as well.
Anyone here have experience with Pentosin?
I was playing with my iDrive yesterday, learning how to reset my clock after the time change, and found the "service" screen. It indicates that the oil change is past due, I made an ass of myself assuming that the dealer I purchased the car from had performed a oil change, yet they could (should have) changed the oil and did not reset the service light. Is the service indicator automatically reset or is it done manually via the iDrive?
I have never owned such a confusing car as I still cannot figure out how to raise/lower the head rest/restraints even after going over and over the owners manual.

Service light reset is manually done.
