E39 Engine interchangeablility
I am trying to find information on engine interchangeability in a 2000 E39 528i. It was a super engine with about 140K. It was stolen and found on an Interstate. The thermostat housing cracked and lost coolant and it overheated. As of right now it will turn very fast but sounds as though it has no compression at all. I would like to repair it but the situation lends a problem.
I am trying to find out what other 2.8 engines will work. I know it has an aluminum block ans was typically in the 1999-2000 3 and 5 series cars. I am wondering if a 3.0 will bolt up if I use items such as intake manifold and sensors from the old engine? Seems I read about someone that used a later model engine but can't remember where.
Were it up to me I would just install a Small Block Chevy engine in it and be done with it but it is my sisters car and it is about 3-1/2 hours away. She called a BMW dealer and they want $12,500 to replace the engine.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
