I am the owner of a 2004 545i. We live in Denver, CO where it gets very cold at times. This is the first winter for this car, we purchased it in Atlanta, and when it gets below about 15 Deg F a warning light for the steering and suspension goes off. It just dawned on me to check the power steering fluid level. As suspected it is low. Quick question is, do I have to locate CHS11S oil for power steering fluid or is there something usually available at an auto parts store that will work?

Does anyone know why there is no mention of this in the maintenace part of the owners manual? There is nothing that I can find on adding power steering fluid.

Thanks
Mark T

There is no aftermarket replacement fluid as far as I know. You'll either have to buy a bottle at the dealer (or online) for around $25 or have them top it off.

On the P/S cap it says ATF FLUID ONLY (at least on mine it does). So now we need to figure out what type of ATF...

Pentosin 11.S is on a service receipt in my files from a recent trip to an independent garage. This is some special synthetic fluid so it is best to obtain a pint or two from your BMW dealer parts dept or maybe order some online from Bavarian Autosport or another vendor...

+1, Mine was low today along with another M5 I was with. We drove to our local dealer, and they topped it off for us. AFAIK, you can only get it from the dealer.

I've compared its specs to other syn fluids and the Pentosin blows most everything else away.

Look at pour point and flash point: http://www.taligentx.com/passat/info/fluid...sin_CHF_11s.pdf

Had the same problem this past weekend (could this be a winter issue?) and was able to get a liter of Pentosin CHF 11S from a local NAPA store for about $20.
