My steering wheel creeks (sounds like plastic, grinding sound) when my steering wheel auto tilts up or back. It used to only do it when it was very hot out...now it happen all the time.

I have seen threads where people had to have their steering column replaced. Also, some have written that their service center lubricated it and it went away.

Does anyone have DIY instructions on how to lube the steering tilt mechanism?

Thanks in advance.

No. Viewing/Listening to the Youtube video, I hear the engine stopping, but don't hear a grinding in the steering column. Anyone in my car, has no doubt that the noise is coming from the steering column while it is in motion.

is the noise when you turn off the engine and your steering goes up ? or maybe when you are driving..on the you tube video sounds like a clunk when I turn off the car and the steering lifts..

Yes, it is definitely when the steering is tilting up or down. It is not, however, a clunk. It is a grinding/creeking, like the sound of a door hinge which needs oil.

this may sounds stupid but... did you check and see if there was anything physically in the way?

Nothing is in the way - at least externally. The sound is internal to the steering column. I haven't tried to take apart the column to get to the moving parts.

Hi!
I know exacly what do you mean!!!As my wife 545i does the same, it's a very annoying noise like something scratching no matters if you turn left or right.
You can found some DIY instructions online to lubricate the column steering!

I had this same steering column grind when I turned off the car. Brought it into the dealer and they said that lubrication was the answer. However, when they opened it up, they determined that it was a steeling column failure. They replaced the entire column. It's $1,200 if not under warranty. Luckily, I was.

Damn, I hated that noise.
