On Car DPF Clean
The other day I got the "DPF full" warning light on my LCI 530d. Probably as a result of too many low speed trips.
The last time this happened I removed it and got it professionally cleaned. Since this was a major hassle I decided if it ever happened again I would try the on car flushing chemicals so I bought some in advance - Liqui Moly 5169 cleaner and 5171 purge.
I didn't buy a pressure bottle applicator (way too much money for me) at the time so I gathered some bits from the garage and fabricated one (lathe + welder needed). Images attached.
The you tube video was useful:
The only place to get the probe in was at the temperature sensor hole between the cat and the dpf so it has to be short (10cm) otherwise it hits the bodywork.
My applicator has a downside in that once the trigger is pushed the cleaner will spray until the container is empty - so I filled it up with 300ml and applied it over 3 intervals.
Kept it moving all the while to get as much coverage as possible.
After that I waited as per the instructions (15 mins) before spraying the purge fluid.
Then started the car and let it idle for about 10 mins while the heated cleaner/purge cleared out (lots of steam).
After that I went for a drive (approx 30km highway) and watched on the carly as a regen started. Phew.
Power is back again.
I will probably get another bottle or two of DPF cleaner to keep on the shelf since it worked pretty well as advertised.
However - I will save myself a few more bucks by using water to purge the DPF since I am pretty sure that's all Liqui Moly 5171 is (plus a bit of dye). See here: http://www.chemical-check.de/clientv...5171_51690.pdf
Companies that sell additives are keen to avoid the "snake oil" label - it seems odd that one of them may be selling water at $40/litre - even if it is in their own words
