Default 2008 535i Oil Filter Housing Gasket(s) Replacement Help

So the dealer notified me that I have a leak in my Oil Filter Housing Gasket. I looked myself and yes, there is oil residue around the oil filter housing. This seems a bit ridiculous since I only have 65k miles on this car, but that's another topic I suppose...

This is a 2008 535i.

The Dealer wants $800 to replace the gasket(s). According to my research there are actually two gaskets, not sure if that price includes both. The gaskets cost less than $15 each and reading on the forums, this should be a relatively easy DIY yes?

Does anyone have a write up or guide or pics of how to do this gasket replacement on my car? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think mine is leaking too. I just replaced my cap a few minutes ago due to a leak that I could not tell exactly where it was coming from. I just wanted to rule out the cap and if its still leaking I'll have a friend check to see if I am installing the cap correctly. And then maybe change this gasket in the housing if it's still there..

I just did this at 72k. I have 09 535i
Its a pretty easy diy just gets little messy. $15 for gasket.
Found a leak, what is this part??!! - N54tech.com | BMW N54 N55 135 335 535 Turbo Performance Forum
Followed this diy. If i would do this again i wouldnt try to move the oil cooler line from the housing again like the diy stated.
To get the bolt that hold the line from the housing is pain to get it out. try to get a univesal joit socket with some extension. Trust me itll make the job much easier.
Also when u remove the housing itll gush out some oil n coolants. So have some towels or anything to catch them. So have get some distilled water in hand to put it in the coolant. It only a little coolant so u dont have to mix or anything.
After you get the gasket out clean the area and put in new one and everythin in reverse order.
It should take u a hr. Easy diy. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I cleaned the area up with some engine cleaner. I'm going to wait a week or so to see exactly where the leaks are coming from (if I can). I already bought both gaskets since they were cheap. Now I need to decide if I need to replace both or just one. That front gasket definitely looks simpler.

I just replaced mine. There are three seals you need to consider. One is the front cover seal to housing, then there is a similar seal that is at the side of the engine block. Also, there are two o rings that you should also change. I was going to put together a DIY for the 535. So maybe tomorrow or the following day. It takes about one hour to do it and that includes cleaning etc. From a 1-10 I would rated it a 2-3. If you are seeing oil in the top area of your housing and down the front of your engine I would bet this is your problem. Most likely you only need the cover to housing gasket and the two o rings.

I put off the fix and yesterday I noticed at least one of my belts was slipping a little...popped the hood and yep, oil leaking. I cleaned it again, but I need to get serious about this fix by this weekend!

Thanks for the DIY! Is it reasonable for a local Indy to charge me 845 for Labor Service - OIL FILTER STAND Gasket?

Thats crazy! Follow the DIY, it's really easy and you should be done in no more than one hour and maybe 25.00 out of your pocket.
