The velour mats in our car have become rather dirty during the winter and springtime, and the dirt on them doesn't come off too easily when vacuuming.

Has anyone tried washing them down with a garden hose?

I know this was pretty easy on the velour mats of the E39, as I belive they had rubber instead of "velcro" on the underside.

Carpet cleaner?

This is why I tend to use the Rubber mats during winter on all my cars.
