I was at the dealer few days ago, in the front of the line, a dude had to replace his battery for his e39, they were charging him $300. The dude got pretty upset, so as he was waiting for the new battery... I was like:

"Hey! ya you, I have the same car, I bought my battery from Autozone for $90, I had it for almost 6 months w.o any problem."

the dude ask few questions and left the dealer to vist autozone.

It depends on how long the warranty for the battery is. Different components have different warranty terms. You should have the details of your warranty in your owners' kit.

Yes, so long as you have a "favorable driving profile" that keeps the battery charged to BMW standards. They replaced mine anyway, but they do have a policy on it. There's a thread about it if you do a search.

The short answer is that it depends on the dealer and the reason for the battery failure. If they think or believe that the failure was caused by your actions, then no may be the word of the day. Let me clarify what your actions could mean:

- leaving accessories plugged into the outlets (yep, Center BMW stated that this kept the car from 'sleeping' and leads to battery depletion)
- adding aftermarket amps or other accessories to the ciruit (hard-wired radars come to mind)
- as CWS530 stated, not having a 'favorable driving profile' (yup, they pull this bullshit on people too)

If one dealer denies it, another may approve it. It really is the luck of the draw it seems. Good luck!

In the US, the battery coverage is included as part of the factory warranty...

I believe the factory warranty covers different items for different durations. Like, the rust and perforation warranty is the longest, while the warranty for the other components may be shorter....
