I would think a G35 would FEEL faster, even if it ISN'T faster.

The E60 is SOOOO smooth and quiet that you don't feel any sensation of speed. 60mph feels like 30, 100 feels like 50, etc.

On the highway if I scratch an itch in my leg and my toes wiggle, the car goes from 80 to 100 without me noticing it.

If I'm on the phone or playing with NAV, I might forget to shift and I'll be cruising on the highway in 2nd gear at redline without me noticing it!

Its like a spaceship moving through a vacuum...no drama, no noise, no resistance.

Very impressive from an engineering standpoint, but very sterile from an emotional standpoint.

Its all relative though. I'm coming from a Jeep and a Porsche so I'm used to lots of noise and feedback. YMMY

[quote name='Jeffs' date='Oct 23 2005, 11:35 PM']My friend has a G35 coupe 6 speed and against my 545....difference is not that huge if u drive normally (545 pulls away at 130mph).

As you've indicated, this may be true under normal driving. However, both cars being driven aggressively down a straight path, you really should be pulling away much, much sooner. Also, depending on your speed, you should be in the correct gear to keep your RPM's close to 6100. This is where the 4.4L motor produces its maximum power.

Sorry guys.....didnt try out racing from slower speeds....that time I was just cruising at 90 with my friend behind and stomped on teh pedal at 100mph and only got to shake him off at about 130....all in 5th and 6th gear....
Well....couple nights back me and friend decided to seriously do a side-by side comparison. My 545 is stock and his is modified (exhaust, high-flow cats, intake) G35 6-spd coupe which is faster than the sedan he said, claiming 280-90hp if I'm not mistaken. 40mph both cars second gear....stomped on gas and both cars were equal in 2nd....we both powershifted to third, shifting times were equal because both cars were still identical starting 3rd gear. Then I began to pull away a teenie weenie bit. For some reason he hit redline sooner and shifted to 4th while I was still in 3rd and I pulled away more. By the time I shifted to 4 at 90mph and on.....the gap became wider.....so there....545 IS indeed alot faster. Wonder how fast the new G35's are at 298hp....

I agree the M35 would be a better direct comparison to a 530i.

Again though...no stick shift on the M...? One of the reasons I am gettign a 5.? I can row my own gears, name another luxury midsize car that offers 255 hp and 360 hp engines with stick shifts.

The field narrows.? Maybe JUST BMW.

Not sure but Cadillac - CTS-V. 400HP midsize luxury with a manual tranny. I believe the stock engine is about 250 hp.

yep.....although I have yet to see one in action or drive one..i am quite sure that it would beat a 545 or even 550 on the highway any day....though I am a bimmer fan....i must admit the CTS-V loosk sweet

The G35 will FEEL alot faster then the E60. I like the handling of both cars to be honest my 545i has active steering which I like alot it's a diffeent feeling then My G35 coupe my coupe has a much more heavier/direct feeling to it and the speed is alot more noticeable then inside my 545i so I can only imagine what it feels like in a 530i But I don't care what anyone says being an owner of both and canyon running the G it handles better over all sedan vs sedan I dunno but my couple handles better I still like how it feel better then my previous M3 E46 infact. In my 545i though I agree when people say 100 feels like 65 in the bimmer though so I can vouch for that but don't hate on the G it is a good car performance wise. The bimmer E60 is WAAAAAAAY more luxury and far more better built though which is why I bought one and I love every minute of it. So I'd say performance wise you'll miss the G but once you feel that quality from the E60 you'll forgot it quickly cause being realistc it's not that bad to be slower. I should know I wish I didn't have a 420HP supercharged G maybe I'd still have a good driving record and cheaper insurance to match.I bought the 545i cause it was the perfect balance of all those things together for me.
