I find it amusing how hot the "press" was on this car.... we had FWD V6 powered Pontiac Grand Prix's running in the 9's and 10's for close to 5 years now

Of course it was a special edition drag strip only SS/AA Dodge Dart stripped out and stuffed with a full race HEMI. But yes it was sold on the showroom floor by Dodge. With some track bars and tuning it was in the 8s. It dominated the SS/AA class for decades and may still!!!

The workers at Hurst would actually take a sledge hammer to the fenderwells of the small cars to facilitate installation of the Hemi. Other touches separating the Super Stock racers from its regular production A-body siblings included a fiberglass nose - fenders and hood - lightened bumpers, deleted side view mirrors, trunk mounted batteries, acid dipped doors, belt straps for window cranks, and lightened A100 seats riding on fixed swiss-cheesed seat rails for decreased weight. The rear wheel well arches were also hacked by Hurst in the same manner the shock towers were modified up front- crudely! Total production of the specially modified A-bodies is generally accepted 50 for Dodge, and 50 for Plymouth, however some figures are as high as 75 for each model. These cars also have the distinction of being sold from the showroom floor in two shades of Gray Primer-the nose in a darker shade than the rest of the car. The cars were also delivered from the factory on 7 x 14" steel wheels, heater, radio, sound deadening, and a rear seat were also absent from the window sticker. Speaking of windows, the cars also had a disclaimer on the window stating "WARNING: THIS SUPER STOCK VEHICLE IS TO BE SHIPPED ON THE BOTTOM LEVEL ONLY OF ALL RAIL AND TRUCK TRANSPORTATION". This was to ensure that the low-hanging hemi's oil pan wouldn't get damaged, and also to keep the fiberglass nose from getting damaged on any pesky low-hanging obstacles. The windows were also constructed of ultra light Lexan, and very rarely did any of the ultra light glass make it to the showroom floor.
This car and its sister car, the Hurst Hemi Barracuda, would dominate Super Stock for decades to come; in fact, it still does today.
