Details about the all new 5-Series have finally been announced. This generation 5-Series, code-named G30, is focused on bringing the latest safety and connectivity technology to the forefront. Lighter than its predecessor by almost 150 pounds, the new 5-Series incorporates new driving dynamics such as electronic anti-roll bars and a new M-sport option package.

In terms of keeping you connected, the 5-Series benefits from an improved iDrive 6.0 system that you’d normally find in the flagship 7-Series. It now features a touchscreen in addition to the iDrive controller, and also uses hand gesture control as well. Gesture controls are detected by a 3D sensor within the car, meaning its use will be intuitive for things like answering phone calls and adjusting radio settings.

In terms of safety, several autonomous driving features have been added. Not only will a driver see benefit from active lane departure systems and automated braking systems, but the new 5-Series also includes emergency maneuver systems that can change a lane if the situation calls for it. It also has what’s called Traffic Jam Assistant, which eases driver inputs and reduces driving stress. Another neat feature is the Remote Control Parking feature, which is able to move the car in a space with as little as 15 inches of room, with all controls handled by the BMW Display key.

At launch, we’ll only see two engines available, with a V8 version and an M5 to follow some time after. Naming for the car will change from the previous version. The 2.0 turbo four cylinder will now be called the 530i, and the twin power turbo inline six will be called the 540i. Horsepower has increased to 335 for the six cylinder model, while the four cylinder stays at 240. There’s no word yet on the appearance of a GT model.
