If you haven’t been notified already, the NHSTA’s expanded airbag recall notice now affects over 800,000 BMW-made vehicles from 2006-2015. It includes 1 series, 3 series, X1, X3, X5, and X6 models. Though this isn’t as large as the recall affecting Mercedes-Benz, the recall details are the same: it’s made in an abundance of caution because of airbag units deploying sharp metal fragments that may injure or kill occupants of a vehicle, though no official incidents have occurred.

Though this may be worrisome, it’s not like you can just drive down to your local BMW dealership and have the recall completed. With the vast amount of new parts needed, the recall will be carried out in steps, including a contact from BMW North America letting you know that your vehicle actually is affected, and then a letter from a local dealership letting you know the appropriate parts are in stock to perform the service to your car.

Not quite sure what to do, or wondering if your car is part of the recall? BMW has provided an information hotline at 1-800-525-7417, or you can e-mail at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.
